Packing list for EBC trek

The most useful advice we got from other bloggers and forums was regarding what to pack for the Everest Base Camp trek. Thought I’d share what we ended up taking and some personal comments:

Clothing

  • Down jacket – rented in Kathmandu (1)
  • Fleece (1)
  • Light hiking pants, convertible (1)
  • Heavy hiking pants, waterproof (1) – bought in Kathmandu – not needed
  • Short-sleeve hiking t-shirts, non-cotton (2)
  • Long-sleeve hiking t-shirts, non-cotton (2) – used one for sleeping
  • Hoodie (1) – used for evenings and sleeping
  • Thermal inner pants (1) – used for sleeping and hiking when cold
  • Thick hiking socks (4)
  • Thin hiking liners (3)
  • Shade hat or cap (1)
  • Woolen hat (1) – bought in Namche
  • Light or liner gloves (1)
  • Ski gloves (1) – not needed
  • Hiking boots, broken in (1)
  • Flip-flops, sandals better to wear with socks (1)
  • Sneakers (1)
  • Panties (4)
  • Sports bras (2)
  • Buff (1) – bought in Namche
  • Sunglasses, 100 UV polarized (1-2)
  • Poncho (1) – not needed

Gear

  • 30l daypack, meshed back, raincover (1)
  • 50l backpack (1 for 2 people) – for sherpa porter
  • Sleeping bag, -10C (1) – rented in Kathmandu
  • Hiking poles (1) – rented in Kathmandu
  • Trekking towel (1)
  • Camelpack, hydration bladder (1)
  • Water bottle (1)
  • Headlamp and extra batteries (1)

Toiletries & First Aid

  • Sunscreen, SPF 50+
  • Lipbalm
  • Babywipes, 2-3 per day
  • Toilet paper
  • Toothbrush and paste
  • Soap and shampoo
  • Hairbrush
  • Tampons
  • Diamox, start taking it two days in advance
  • Ibuprofen
  • Loperamide
  • Nasal spray
  • Moleskin and band-aids
  • Tweezers
  • Knee pad
  • Water purification iodine tablets

Miscellaneous

  • Camera DSLR, extra batteries and backpack clip
  • Phone, charger and headphones
  • Snacks: powerbars, dried fruit, nuts, gels, cocoa powder, water flavoring drops
  • Trash/plastic bags
  • Notebook and pens
  • eBook
  • Cash, both rupees and dollars
  • Passport
  • TIMS card and Sagarmatha entrance ticket – bought on the way

The teahouses and villages along the way sell almost everything, though the prices are high, especially the further away you’re from Lukla. Packing a bunch of snacks saves you some money and guarantees you have all your favorites when you don’t feel hungry (which will happen due to altitude).

Hi, thanks so much for the list! My husband and I are going this Sept./Oct. I’m trying to find out how many liters my backpack should be with no porter. We’ll do teahouses so no tent. Any suggestions? Thanks again!

    1. Hi Tara,
I’d say 40l each… you’d probably take less stuff than we did, especially snacks and extra clothes, to limit the weight, but you’ll still need a good down jacket and sleeping bag, and those take up quite some space.
      Enjoy your adventure!

    1. Hi Mick,
We did the trek in early May, and didn’t use some of the warmest clothes, so this list should be perfect for the time you’re planning.
Enjoy, you’re in for a lifetime adventure!
